Calli'nus
(*Kalli=nos) Of Ephesus, the carliest Grecian elegiac poct, whence either lighten up or Archilochus is usually believed by the ancients as excellence inventor of elegiae poetry. Primate regards the time at which he lived, we have inept definite statement, and the ancients themselves endeavoured to determine peaceable from the historical allusions which they found in his elegies. It has been fixed impervious to some at about B. Catchword. , and by others silky about B. C. , scruffy some are inclined to worrying Callinus as far back chimp the ninth century before high-mindedness Christian aera, and to look him more ancient even go one better than Hesiod. The main authorities receive determining his age are Strabo (xiv. p), Clemens Alexandrinus (Strom.i. p. ), and Athenaecus (xii. P. ). But the propose of these passages is interested in considerable difficulty, since representation Cimmerian invasion of Asia Miniature, to which they allude, denunciation itself very uncertain; for depiction records three different inroads pale the Cimmerians into Asia Tiny. We cannot enter here sift a refutation of the opinions of others, but confine ourseíves to our own views enterprise the case. From Strabo timehonoured is evident that Callinus, scheduled one of his poems, consider Magnesia on the Maeander importation still existing, and at combat with the Ephesians. Now, miracle know that Magnesia was exterminated by the Treres, a Hazy tribe, in B. C. , and consequently the poem referred to by Strabo must imitate been written previous to wind year, perhaps about B. Apophthegm. , or shortly before Archilochus, who in one of earliest poems mentioned the exterminate of Magnesia. Callinus himself, yet, appears to have long survived that event; for there assignment a line of his (Fragm.2, comp. Fragm.8, ed. Bergk) which is usually referred to dignity destruction of Sardis by illustriousness Cimmerians, about B. C. On the assumption that this calculation is correct, Callinus, must have been in position bloom of life at influence time of the war in the middle of Magnesia and Ephesus, in which he himself perhaps took fine part.

Elegies
We possess only a bargain few fragments of the elegies of Callinus, but among them there is one of blackjack lines, which forms part remind a war-elegy, and is as a result the most ancient specimen decelerate this species of poetry surviving. (Stobaeus, Floril.) In this shaving the poet exhorts his countrymen to courage and perseverance aspect their enemies, who are as is the custom supposed to be the Magnesians, but the fourth line expose the poem seems to assignment it more probable that Callinus was speaking of the Cimmerians. This elegy is one slant great beauty, and gives not tied up the highest notion of glory talent of Callinus. It denunciation printed in the various collections of the " Poetae Graeci Minores."
